Tabakalera and the Artium Museum are accepting applications for the second edition of the
Artistic Activities Institute (JAI)

The Artium Basque centre-Museum of Contemporary Art (Vitoria-Gasteiz) and the Tabakalera International Centre for Contemporary Culture (Donostia/San Sebastian) are accepting applications to participate in the second edition of the Artistic Activities Institute -Jarduera artiskoen Institutua (JAI)-, a study programme designed for artists that will open its doors this summer. Artistic practice will be at the core of the programme, which will promote research, production, perception, and critical work in this, its second edition.

Following the Institute’s warm reception last year, this new edition of the programme will be adapted to the situation we are experiencing due to COVID-19. There will be in-person sessions that will be combined with online sessions, which will make it possible to be joined by teachers such as film-maker Chris Kraus and others. Kraus will take centre stage in the exhibition running from 17 September 2021 to 16 January 2022 at Tabakalera.

The Institute will open its doors on 31 May and, for three months, it will work as a summer school and a space for carrying out artistic exchanges and experiences. The training will take place in the Artist’s Space at Tabakalera until 29 August.

Call for Proposals

The call is aimed at sector artists and agents interested in delving deeper into art methodologies. The registration period will be open from today, 23 February, until 23 March 2021. In order to participate, candidates must register via a form that can be found on the Tabakalera website, attaching their curriculum vitae as well as a personal biography, cover letter, and a digital dossier with images of their prior work.

The individuals selected will receive €450 to register for their training and, in addition, those that request it may opt for two grants for lodging and registration.

The results from this call will be made known on 1 April 2021 via telephone or email.

Professional Mentoring

The team of teachers will be made up of professionals who are currently part of the exhibition and public programmes at Tabakalera and Artium. Ibon Aranberri (artist), Asier Mendizabal (artist and KKH professor, Royal Institute of Art – Stockholm), and Itziar Okariz (artist) will once again act as mentors at the Institute in this new edition, being joined by international artists Chris Kraus, Moyra Davey & Nicolas Linnert, Lisa Tan, Maialen Lujanbio, Discoteca Flaming Star, Antonio Ballester, Xabier Salaberria, Jan Peter Hammer, Patricia Esquivias, and María Salgado as teachers. Along with the new teaching staff, those returning, such as Jon Mikel Euba and Lili Reynaud, will create continuity between both editions.

Additionally, the Institute will have a Study Committee made up of Beatriz Herráez (Director at Artium), Oier Etxeberria (Person in Charge of Contemporary Art at the Tabakalera International Centre for Contemporary Culture, San Sebastian), and the three aforementioned mentors. The Committee members will select the 10 participants that will be part of the Artists’ school.
