The 21st edition shines under the symbol of women and Latin America
From 4 to 7 April, Art Paris 2019 brings together 150 art galleries showing modern and contemporary art from 20 countries under the majestic dome of the Grand Palais. The international fair examines European cultural models from post war to the current day, at the same time as exploring the new horizons of international creation. In this 21st edition of the fair, the focus is on showcasing women artists from France and this year’s guest of honour, Latin America. Finally, the VIP programme illustrates the effervescence of the Parisian scene in spring – a time when the French capital literally becomes the centre of the art world – highlighting the presence of Latin America in the City of Lights.
Honouring women artists: a different French cultural perspective
Under the curatorship of the association AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions, 250 projects have been selected from the female artists exhibiting at the participating galleries. This selection is focused on the subjective and critical gaze on French female creation from the post war period to the present day, presented under four thematic periods: abstract, feminist avant-garde, image and theatricality. AWARE was asked to write a text about each artist; situating their work within the history of art.
AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions was co-founded in 2014 by Camille Morineau, an art historian specialising in women artists and director of Exhibitions and Collections at the Monnaie Paris. The association aims to create, classify and disseminate information about 20th Century female artists. www.awarewomenartists.com
Southern Stars: an exploration of Latin American art
In 2019, Art Paris explores the artistic territories of Latin America from the 1960s to the present day. Some twenty European, Asian and Latin American galleries present a series of 60 artists from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela. The continent’s creative spark will be showcased through parallel projects including a video programme, installation artworks, the presentation of a private collection and conferences at the Maison de l’Amérique Latine.
The curatorship of Southern Stars: an exploration of Latin American art has been entrusted to Valentina Locatelli, independent exhibition curator based in Switzerland.
Solo Show: a record breaking 39 monographic exhibitions
Since 2015, Art Paris has been supporting the presentation of monographic exhibitions shown at the heart of the fair. The 2019 edition presents a record number of thirty nine solo shows (topping the thirty six shown in 2018), an indicator of the selection process which drives the galleries to propose related and fitting projects for the fair.
