Tabakalera, International Centre for Contemporary Culture
As a leading space for supporting talent development and creation, Tabakalera has the aim of making the building’s spaces and resources available to creators and artists throughout the year. In addition to the programming offered annually as an exhibition space, Tabakalera’s main mission is to encourage production and creation, particularly in a year where the cultural sector’s social and economic context has been especially challenging.
In 2021, Tabakalera is offering a collection of programmes, open calls, and support services aimed at consolidating creator professionalisation, and strengthening proposals geared towards promoting creation processes.
In response to this goal, the International Centre for Contemporary Culture is presenting three open calls for artists and curators:
JAI – Institute for Artistic Practices

For three months the second edition of the Institute for Artistic Practices (JAI) will host ten participants so that they can develop their artistic projects, advised by professional tutors from the sector. The call is aimed at sector artists and agents interested in delving deeper into art methodologies.
Ibon Aranberri (Artist), Asier Mendizabal (Artist and Professor at KKH, Royal Institute of Art of Stockholm), and Itziar Okariz (Artist) will work as tutors for this new edition of the Institute. Participation as teachers will be undertaken by Moyra Davey & Nicolas Linnert, Jon Mikel Euba, Lily Reynaud Dewar, Lisa Tan, Maialen Lujanbio, Dis-coteca Flaming Star, Antonio Ballester, Xabier Salaberria, Chris Kraus, Ren Ebel, Jan Peter Hammer, Patricia Esquivias and María Salgado.
Two registration and accommodation grants will be awarded.

Residency for Artistic Projects 2021

This call for residency applications aims to support the development of artistic projects in any format regardless of the artistic discipline. Those invited to make a submission for the open call are artists and agents who are residents of the Basque Autonomous Community, as well as those from Spain and abroad.
The residency, which will last four to eight weeks, will offer space and resources for the development of the artistic project, which will also receive professional mentoring from the Contemporary Art department of Tabakalera.

Komisario Berriak 2021

KBK is a programme aimed at people with an interest and commitment to professionalism in the field of CURATORSHIP. The call is aimed at all natural persons with a career linked to curatorship: historians, artists, curators and other professionals from the field of research / international researchers.
A call offering three grants will be issued in 2021, one for each of the collaborating centres: Tabakalera (Donostia/San Sebastian), Artium Museoa (Vitoria-Gasteiz) and Azkuna Zentroa (Bilbao). Tabakalera’s proposal focuses on the digital format for online projects.
